Rostov Veliky is an ancient calm Russian town, 180 kilometers north of Moscow, and 60 kilometers south of Yaroslavl.
 

By Train

 

A railway from Moscow to Yaroslavl goes through Rostov. There are around 4 trains daily to / from Moscow, 3-4 trains to / from Kostroma, and 1 direct train to Kostroma.
If you miss the train to Moscow, you can get by a local train to Alexandrov (which is between Rostov and Moscow - 120 km from Moscow), and then take a local train ('elektrichka') to Moscow.
 
The train station is located on Moscow - Yaroslavl motorway in the same building as the bus station and is outside of the city centrum. The Kremlin is within 15-20 minutes walk from the station.
There are automatic lockers at the station, or you can ask the "person on duty" at the station to keep bags for you for free (if you take them back until 7pm). The railway station information: (08536) 3-27-06.

The daily buses go to / from Moscow, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Uglich, Pereslavl-Zalessky, Sergiev Posad, and local destinations.
There are direct buses to Moscow, Yaroslavl, Kostroma. If you want to get to Pereslavl - Zalessky, take any bus that goes to Moscow. If you want to get to Sergiev Posad, look for the buses to Moscow with "s.p." - "с.п." sign in the schedule at the bus station, it means the bus goes through Sergiev Posad.
The tickets for most of the buses are sold upon arrival.
The bus station is located in the same building as the train station, 15-20 walk to the center of the city.

The public transport

 
A bus will take you from the bus station to the center of the city, but it's better to walk (15-20 min). Routes #2, #3.
 
You can get around 'Nero' lake by a hired motor-boat (with a driver) for 5000​ rubles/day (€65) or bargain with a driver. Another option is to rent a or a hired row boat at 250 rubles (€3.5) for up to 4 people (again, bargain). The boat rental is on the shore of 'Nero' lake, take a route to the lake from the Kremlin through the garden of 'Hors' guesthouse.
