hello all - I am going to be in Listvyanka for 3 days in June before heading off to Ulan Bataar and would be grateful for any recommendations for things to see and do - I would like to know if it's worth heading into Irkutsk for a day, and, if so, how to do this..and I would like to know about taking a trip on the Baikal railway or taking a tour on the lake (are there day tours to the island)?
Finally - where are the best pubs ? ! Very Happy
Slainte !

I just spent 2 weeks in Listvyanka, so I think I can give you some ideas of what to do!!! One of the first things I would do is go to the little information center across from the ugly orange hotel..they speak English there, and they are helpful. There is a museum you can visit with a room full of old specimens from the lake and a small aquarium with Nerpa seals swimming around. Across from that, a glass bottomed boat leaves off the little dock that is down there. From the museum, walking away from Listvyanka there is also a Nerpa aquarium..the animals look much happier there! Behind the museum up a huge hill is a ski lift, which boasts one of the best views of the lake. There are also several other boat tours which leave from the main dock next to the information center. You can also do rides on quads through the mountains, although it is expensive. There is also a sun observatory which you can go to.

"Teremok" a little cafe by the souvenir/fish market has delicious borscht, plov-rice with meat, and kabobs, I would recommend eating there...its cheap and good. They also have all the alcohol you could ever want, so that answers that question to!

Getting to and from Listvyanka is pretty easy...you have 2 options- a regular bus which leaves 3 times a day or marshrutka (minibus) which leaves approx hourly, which leaves from the "Avtovokzal" in Irkutsk and arrives in front of the information center.

If you have any more questions ask away! If you need a place to stay I can also recommend a couple of places...
