@Stanj : You definitely have a point about not being in debts, and about the fact that average people definitely can talk about more interesting things than in the USA (that's probably the main thing that made me want to move to Russia)... but usually in Russian only (which doesn't matter to me any more).
I'll think about mentioning this absence of debts and your whole part about money to my Russian wife next time she's a bit down and complains about our money situation (which is not bad at all but not as good as your friends' probably : renting a nice apartment in a nice part of Piter, often going out and holidays abroad 3 times in 2 years... I won't complain).
But you definitely hang out with upper class not representative of the whole society : own their appartments at 25 ? When did they have time to save 200k$ ??? I'm still fighting for that several years later.
Don't worry I don't hang with gold diggers, I just know for sure they still exist (To be fully honest I bumped into one less than 2 years ago - she took about 2000 or 3000 RUR before I came to my senses so it was not a very expensive lesson) . And when I mentioned people giving directions in the street, I meant random people. You don't choose who is around when you need to know where is the nearest metro or café etc. But again, the difference between a random discussion in the USA and in Russia is fantastic (although to be fair you'll have a big diversity in the USA depending on the city).

Oh and another thing I forgot to comment, Stanj : you said that we only get mediocre French wine. Where do you shop ? 5ochka ???
At Okey you'll get AOC wine (mostly Bordeaux) starting at 350. AOC wine is always good (sure a Vin de Pays can be better than some AOC, but if you don't know, take an AOC of the type you want), except if it has cork smell, which is pretty rare (I doubt you could go to Okey and get your money back if it happens as you would in France, but the case hasn't happened to me so far). And still in Okey you have very good wine too. Sure they're all 3 times more expensive than in France but that's true for most countries. You'll have to be very, very demanding to say they don't have good French wine in Okey. And even if you do you'll find very good wine shops.
If you're not satisfied with the Château Mouton Rothshild you'll find at OKey I'll give you the address of at least one wine shop where you'll have the possibility to spend as much as you want. |

One of stupid things is when city is closed for presidential visit. People have to wait for hours in traffic jams, ambulance can't get to hospitals. Some people will say that it's untrue, well it's always up to you who you believe.

For me that looks quite normal and true. |
