When I was there malnutrition was least probable cause of death. The food was poorly prepared but I ate very much. The level of dedovshina depends on the officers. If they don't care there will be dedovshina, if they care there won't be dedovshina.

One note. Watching the movie you should see a difference in physical conditions of newly enlisted and "old" soldiers.

You (Bryce) are welcome to join our army. As russian I'm interested in it. But you should know your service might be very harsh and you have to learn Russian well. |

It does not work.
Go to the BBC website and watch the video about the Russian Army. Russian Army is bunch of school bureaucrats who have stolen from the regular soldiers to improve their own personal wealth and pleasure. If you think picking potatoes at the Captain's Dacha good use of military time. You know if the Russian army invaded Idaho, then would have every potato picked faster than any other army in the world.
Do not like Stalin, but it is time for a time to purge the useless upper/middle management officers of the Russian Army.
If you firmly interested in going, then wait until they are professionizing it and finally have facilities for a professional army versus conscripts.
Russia has even admitted that change is necessary.
So Bryce, I suggest that you join. It is obvious that you are smarter than everyone here including the Russians who have been in the Army. You are smarter than the BBC and even the Russian Army itself who even admit that life is not where it should be. Pack you bags and go.
