My first trip to Russia was to St. Petersburg in the summer of 2004. I could talk forever about the Hermitage itself and its unending list of treasures, or about the unbelievable palaces which surround the city, or about the humbling cathedrals which could make an atheist find his soul, but you already know all that. St. Petersburg is a beautiful city, after all. Tell us something we don’t know.

Well, I could tell you about this girl I met outside St. Isaac’s cathedral, and how she and her Grandmother were so exceptionally kind and generous to me that we remain friends to this day. And I’d love to recount about the time I got lost at night and had to rely on my limited Russian skills to navigate back to my apartment. My favorite story was the time I was walking along Nevsky one evening, when I saw a long line of women standing outside a modest café. Whatever could be going on there, I wondered….and soon found out.

I could tell all these stories, but I’m new to these boards and don’t want to presume yet. But I look forward to telling them as the situation warrants. I’d like to close by saying Russia is such an amazing place – and Russian such an amazing language – that it’s worth all the effort to make a visit and immerse yourself in both.

Looking forward to making new friends here,

Regards,

Mark
