Does anyone anywhere have any information about vladivostok? How to travel cheaply from there to North America? How safe it is for travellers, particularly women on their own? good places to go, to stay, etc.?

For flights from vladivostok, the best bet (and more frequent service) is to fly Vladivostok Air to Seoul, and then get Asiana to Seattle. Unless you want to go back via Moscow it's just about the only game in town at the moment apart from Korean Air.
By the way, the airport is a LONG way from town.....
There are a couple of ok places to stay in Vladivostok, one of them way out of town, and the other a fair old hike with the rest being around the CBD. I could type a fair while on stuff about Vladivostok, but I have some saved links and one or two useful tidbits I can send.

do you know anything about a ferry from near V Vostok /Zarubino to Sokcho in South Korea ?? Prices etc.

Supposedly there is one. It is a service from Sokcho to Zarubino to China (hungchun I think..) that puportedly runs 3 times a week and takes 25.5 hours for the trip Confused

Now, I've never taken this ferry and this is stuff I've gleaned from the web. The last reported price was around 150 US. Then of course Zarubino is a way out west of Vladik (45 miles) and Sokcho is a way out east of Seoul on the coast, so factor in some transport costs.

Hit Altavista.com and punch in "ferry Sokcho" and combinations around this and you'll probably trip over some interesting stuff that may help...like the e-mail address for the company that runs it perhaps Smile

yeah i ve been to sokcho before, lived in korea along time and all that - but never russia ...i was thinking of going from mocscow - vladi by train and then take a boat .........................

Korean air only flies once a week to Seoul (Inchon). As for your own plans, it sounds like an adventure!! Also, supposedly, there is a rail spur to Zarubino. Oh, and I think it is a lot more than 45 miles away from Vladivostok. A US consulate report quoted 200 klm's Crying or Very sad

and 70 klms to the Chinese Border.......
Since you've hung around Korea a while in your travels, the ferry is run by Dongchun Ferry out of Sokcho.

just been to the ferry terminal at sokcho -sun 18th aug
ferry leaves monday/wed at 2pm
friday 3pm.

arrives zarubino at 10 am
takes about 4 hours on the bus to vladi.
got the price list also but its in korean so will have to ask my students to translate it.

Hi I am thinking of going to Russia at the end of 2004 for a short trip on my way home to NZ. I am wondering if anyone has done this and if anyone can give me information on the best way to get there. I was thinking it would be quite cool to go by boat - if i did this, where would I leave from? Hokkaido? Niigata? ???

Is it expensive to travel to Russia from Japan? I only want to travel around the Asian side of Russia at this stage as I will do the Europe side another day.

I currently live in South Korea and I checked on a ticket from Seoul to Vladivostok using Vladivostok Air. The ticket was going to be around 387,000 WON equivilent to about 338.00 USD. Korean Air was going to be 507,000 WON or about 445.00 USD. This was a one way ticket so double for a round trip.
