Dave Barry wrote a funny column about this where he says something like 'those are India's finest, most educated, smartest people on the other line helping you out with your computer.They speak excellent English, problem is they speak it in such a way you can't understand A SINGLE DAMN WORD.'

This is totally unrelated but very interesting- when companies in the U.S.A need dirt cheap labor they often hire out, not illegal immigrants or children, but prisoners, sometimes for phone reception.Placing orders,telemarketing, talking to customers, anything that can be done on computer.Among the buisnesses that do this are airlines, cruises, Victoria's Secret and Target. So when you call to order lingerie, get plane tickets, book a vacation, book a hotel or complain about a new car, you may well be talking to a convicted kidnapper or murderer in a jail cell in New Mexico.
