We are two persons who would like to travel in June/July with the transmongolian train from Beijing to Moscow, stopping in Ulaan Bator for several days.
Does anybody know how we can make reservations or buy the train tickets while we are still in Southeast Asia ?
Can we get the Russian and the Mongolian visa easily in China ?
And finally, if we enter Russia with the train, how is the visa registration done and by whom , since we ourselves are on the train for the first 3 or 4 days ??

Hi Youri,

I've got a similar plan except that I'm going to Bejing in 5 days to catch the next available train. Haven't got any answers to my request how to get a ticket from Southeast Asia yet.

I've got my russian and chinese visa in Bangkok. Was easy and I'd recommend to do it from Thailand if you are arround. Mail service is probably more reliable and staff at the embassies more friendly.

Hey Duderino;

I guess you are already enroute by now, but I was hoping you could answer a question about getting visas in Bangkok. I wanted to know if you had to get an invitation first before you got to Bangkok, or did the agency you went through do everything from start to finish? I'll be in Bangkok before flying to China to start the train tour.

Also, did you buy the first leg of you trip (Beijing to Ulan Bataar) while you were in China or did you book that well in advance?

Let me know if you had any difficulties buying tickets on short notice at this time of year because I will be heading out on that trip about the same time next year.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Happy travels,

Kavers

hi,

you can buy the train tickets in CITS (China International Travel Service), head office located in Beijing International Hotel (in walking distance from Beijing Main Railway Station). they can be bought from 1 month in advance.
ticket prices:
Beijing-UB: 65 euro
Beijing-Moscow: 200 euro
Beijing-Ekaterinaburg: 150 euro
Beijing-Omsk: 140 euro
Beijing-Novosibirsk:130 euro

these are the prices for hard sleeper. approximately let`s say, because some destinations show 2 prices in the hard sleeper category, don`t really understand what the difference is. should you need info on other destinations or not hard sleeper, send me a PM. am a bit lazy, copying the whole thing.

last thing: you can have somebody buy your ticket in CITS. that person only needs a copy of your passport et voila...

Hey, I have been searching and if you search in the Chinese Train web - sites you can get the direct train from Beijing to Moscow Train #3 for about 200 USD.

Also I have got a question, I am a Canadian, and am having a hard time to get a solid answer from anyone regarding how many Visa's I need and what countries they are for. I have a residency card for China.....But what others do I need??????/

Insight please..........

I am in Bangkok now and have just been at the embassy.
They require an invitation and gave me a phone number of a guy working with aeroflot who can arrange it for 4000 bath (100 U$) and it takes one hour.
After that I have to go back to the agency and they want 1265 bath (30 U$) and it takes one week.
I guess I'll find somewhere else where to get the invitation as it seems too expensive.
If anybody needs more info please write here

Tripfoto, 130 USD is not expensive for the letter and visa. It has cost me more for my wife's visa in Canada. I would not spend too much time searching for a cheaper deal.
Cheers,
Bob
