Hello! I just started learning russian, and figured that some russian music might help a bit I'm really into techno, but as long as it's a good beat, I'll listen to just about anything? So, what are some of the more popular musicians in russia? Songs? |

Check out the old favorite Alla Borisovna. There's all kinds of great Russian music, including lots of Russian electronica. Sasha Dith is good, especially the song "Russian Girls" (but you won't learn any Russian from it). I don't care what anyone says, I'm a hardcore metalhead, but I still like TATU. Maschina Vremeny, Akvarium, Discotek Akvaria (I think that's the name of the band).
Not that I'm encouraging anything illegal, but hop on your favorite peer-to-peer software and test some of it out before you buy. |

Eh, sorry for reopening this after it's been unreplied to for a while, but I have some relevant input:
TATU is alright, as mentioned previously.
Via Gra (Nu Virgos) is also a good choice. (Recommended songs: Biologiya, Ne Ostavlyay Menya Lyubimiy, and Spasiba za Leta)
If you don't mind very poppish-music, Polina Gagarina isn't bad.
Ruki Vverh is also a nice choice.
Virus is very techno-ish. You'd probably like them. They're sort've bouncey.
Rammstein has released two songs in Russian, if you like the metal-sort.
Aria is an older Russian band, if you like the loud music.
Gosti iz Budushego is *wonderful*--there's a flash site you can look up. 'Odin Shag' is a beautiful song that I listen to every day.
Kosmikud I listen to quite a bit. It's not bad.
I've heard Valeriy Meladze featured with Via Gra, so I'd check that out too.
I've heard a song or two from Dana, but I don't have a stable opinion to recommend it or not. I heard Ty Gde To Tam. It was very beautiful. |

In the summer, the most popular tracks on Radio Baltic were, without doubt:
Ti grystich - by Stas Pexa (Russian disco)
Uletayu - by A-Studio (Russian R&B)
23 Etax - by Korni (Sort of Oasis style Russian pop )
If they played them once, they played them a thousand times . . .
For learning Russian, try Alsou (Alcy). Mainstream but pleasant - and she pronounces words very clearly.
You can audition tracks easily on mp3search.ru It's not illegal - and you can download mp3s for 10 cents a track. |

As soon as I saw this thread she is the first artist that came to mind. My friend just sent me one of her CD's and it is really charming and upbeat. |

Also, atypicalpenguin -- are you a typical penguin or an atypical penguin? Your name is riddle. . . . |

| Hey, who does that song "Push my Satisfaction"- I think the actual song is "Satisfaction"? Lot's of club music with Russian lyrics here, my wife has Russian TV in our house, lots of music and variety shows, but I can't keep up with it! |

I recommend finding Russian musicians official websites. Many have at least a few songs avaliable for download. Some even have videos too. And all that without any moral issues of downloading music.
Search the artist's name in Russian or transliterate it into English and try that way.
Here's Russia's answer to Shakira:
