Way to Russia Talk Lounge

Hello,

I am living currently in the Eastern part of the United states and I was hoping to one day take a car trip from the Eastern part of the US up into Russia. My question is there such thing as a ferry that takes cars or people from Alaska into Eastern Russia and if there is are there roads from Eastern Russia that would lead me to the Western part of Russia such as Moscow and St. Petersburg etc.

Can anyone give any assitance,

If you are serious about such a trip, i think you should be willing to do some research for yourself in the first place. There is some info on his site and there are also several threads about connections, roads etc etc in the far east of Russia on the forum.

Another 'optimist'. Have you actually looked at a map of the russian far east? Did you see any roads on it? The short answer is 'no' at least not in the sense you are thinking. There are about 3 reliable ways into the russian far east...

1 Magadan > Yakutsk > Skovorodino > Western Russia. The roads are extremely bad.
Ship the car in a 20' container from the western US.
The car will need to something really special to cope with the roads on this route and cars can only do this route in late late summer when the rivers are low enough. 4x4 and then some.
2 Vanino > Khabarovsk > Western Russia.
Ship car in 20' container to Japan and take ferry to sakhalin island and then ferry to Vanino port. Then a few 100's of kms of crap dirt road to Khabarovsk. 4x4 would be okay.
3 Vladivostock > Western Russia. Ship car to Vladivostock in 20' container. This is the easiest route. 4x4 good, but 2wd cars can make the trip. Quite alot of crap dirt roads in Siberia. Trip time probably 4-5 weeks on this route. 9,000kms to Moscow and another 700kms to StP.

These trips require alot of planning and judging by the questions you asked, I'd say don't do it.

Just a little For Your Information. Number one my heritage dates back to Russia. Number Two My Grandma thought of me taking this trip. Number three I am only between the ages of 12-16. So I am not that smart.

Though I do want to apologize. In America ignorant people are everywhere and they espacially bad to people from foreign countries. I am completly against their rude and ignorant behavior. So if either of you were offended by my odd requst then I am Sincerely Sorry.

The one plus point is that by the time you are able to make the trip and afford it, the roads will have improved quite alot. Considering your age, I was a little harsh Wink

but we get much older 'optimists' asking the same question Shocked

Dream on and who knows - you may make the trip in a few years.

Hershy, I think your attitude is top notch!

I am 20 and from Edinburgh in Scotland, when I was younger, older people used to laugh and say it was impossible when myself and my friends said we would drive to Thailand one summer,

well last year we did it, with hardly any planning might I add, It took us over a month and we did encounter a good few problems, but took them on one step at a time, and managed it easier than expected,

don't listen to people who give off negativity without offering any type of solution...those people won't achieve anything special because they give up too easy...

I jus came across this post cos I'm considering driving from the UK, across Europe, through Russia, then over to Canada and the US, then see if we can get all the way down to Brazil,
I'm having a look at trying to cross from Siberia to Alaska whether it be by ferry or whatever, but I'll find a way...somehow

It might take us about a year, we'd prob have to stop for a while in a few places and work, maybe buy a couple vehicle replacements too, but things like this aren't as hard as people make out,

anyway, I just felt compelled to tell the little guy that I'm on his side, and even though he/she says they're not that smart, I would bet they are brighter than most.

Just wait for the winter freeze up and pre arrange your plans with the customs on both ends of your trip. However, the ice conditions may be so bad that crossing the ice by car is not a realistic option.

When I was 1 year old, I walked through all 11 time zones in Russia barefoot. People used to make fun of me alot, but by the time I was 3 I piloted my first plane.

So, now I am 9! I am on top of the world. I was thinking if I could start drilling a hole in the ground... will I eventually get to China?

I am English--- I drove from the UK to the south of Russia--- did it in January 3 years ago - 25 degrees--- did it in a Land Crusier--- have since driven all over Russia--- encountered many problem---- ok ---- never thought of trying to get to Alaska ---- But I am 99% sure there is no Ferry --- and the roads---- well---- virtually non--- if you do try this adventure---- buy the best 4 wheel drive you can--- Landrover--- Rangerover---etc---- dont bring a Hummer or you will probably be mugged shot and killed----- sounds harsh I know--- but I live here and I know----- plus dont even think about having shit loads of cash with you---- make some plan of how to get money as and when---- bank-o-mats are plentiful in the west of Russia---- but as for the East---- Cash point would no be a problem --- if they had the electricity to power them----- dont want to sound the pessimist----- as I am the eternal optomist----- but think and plan this one through

LOL@being shot and killed driving a hummer! Well russia is not the only place you can be shot and killed for driving a hummer Laughing

I think those cars bring out the worst in everyone, I hate seeing them on the road, cause the drivers of these hummers are usually of the assholish variety LOL.
