Hey, I'm travelling on the Trans Siberian railway in Febuary. Just wondering what sort of clothing is appropriate because I understand it is going to be FREEZING. Also can you recommend stockists in edinburgh.
Thanks! |

| do a search on the Travel Advice folder--you'll find lots of topics. Basically get a very good coat (must be of natural, animal fibre like down, wool or fur), prefably with a hood, and winter boots that have fur/wool lining and thick soles. Bring some warm wool sweaters to wear under your coat if you need them, as well as long-sleeved shirts/blouses, thermal underwear (patricularly the bottoms) to wear under jeans. Oh, also, warm hat (if you coat has no hood) and warm scarf. |

I'm not sure how a "natural" coat is going to help him stay warmer, but that is a typical Russian bias. Synthetic materials are excellent here and generally surpass most "natural" materials for warmth, dryness, and durability. For example, nothing is as good as polypropylene long underwear. The stuff is a real miracle fabric.
You shouldn't forget some very good gloves or mittens. Generally mittens would be preferred as they will be warmer.
If you dress like you are going on the coldest ski trip you've ever experienced, you will be fine. Russians seem to prefer hoods to hats, and it probably is helpful if the wind is really blowing. |
