| Perhaps we should send some American troops over and bring law and order to this barbaric place, stamp out corruption and take control of the oil fields. And ... should we give them the taste of our democracy while we are at it? |

| Actually troops aren't needed...and we are rebuilding the oil fields and restructuring the whole industry over there. It was in a state of chaos. Russia and the US have strong ties under the surface. |

that response was actually aimed at the people that were saying that racial violence is very prevelent in russia and that it is a major issue. it is an issue but not at the level people are making it out to be, corruption in the government is a [much] bigger problem today (i am not denying that).
And the American media is biased becuase it reports only the stories that are anti-russian, for example reporting that the 'orange-revolution' was an 'outcry' for the people against russia when half of the population is pro-russian and the current ukranian government is more corrupt than the previous one. For god sake the prime minister was fired for stealing from the people and is still!! a member of the senate. also a freaking pop-star was elected into the senate!!!!!!!!!!! she knows nothing about politics or government and is barely twenty!!!! |

| Well, St-Petersburg is pretty much safe during daytime and in public places at night. You might get into trouble at late night hours, like 4-6 am, when there's very little people in the streets. Or at night from 1-4 am in some lonely places, like outskirts of the city or dark yards of city centre buildings. One murder of uzbek girl happened in such a yard. A couple of other murders - of african students - happened in empty dark not well known streets, on their way back to dormitory. |

| I've been reading through the blogs on the violence occuring in Russia. As a darker skinned latino thats planning to make a trip in April of 07, I'm wondering if I should reconsider or continue with my plans. Is it really as bad as some of you say? |

| St.Pete is a big city like many others - London, NY, Paris...It is no more dangerous than any of them. Come and enjoy it! |

That is not true. St Petersburg is a much more dangerous city based even on the official numbers, that most people agree are not complete. Here is the official statistics in Russian:
http://www.prokuratura.sp.ru/press.html
It states that in the first 8 months of 2006, there have been 570 murders in the city. That's more than in 8.1 million New York in the whole of 2005. And if you count the numbe of assaults and attacks on foreigners and foreign students, it's not a pretty picture.
I agree that if you are careful of your surroundings and stick to the center of the city when there are many people on the streets and it's not dark, you should feel pretty safe in St Petersburg. But comparing it to Paris or London or New York creates a false state of security. For once, in any of those western cities, police actually respects people's rights and truly has the means and desire to investigate crimes. |

| yes the crimes against tourist and foriegners is worriesome, however when it comes to crimes statistics for cities...if a city has 500 murders in any given time period and those murders are say 98% gang related then the odds of a tourist being murdered are pretty low. And of course the odds of being murdered because you are a gang member is pretty high. Yes there are some risks to be considered but I think if one is careful then they should be ok |
