My friends and I will be travelling to moscow very very soon and were wondering if we need to apply for the ISIC card in order to get the student discounts for visiting Kremlin, Hermitage and other museums. Will our own local (non-russian) student card be accepted?
If not accepted, is it possible for us to apply for ISIC card in moscow itself? Will there be any problem for foreign students? |

It would be best if you had a Russian studentcard and spoke Russian then you could get the same discounts as Russian students. Hermitage is at least in St. Pete free for students, as far as I know. Occasionally you might get a student's price with your non-russian student card (i.e. a nice person is serving you =rarity and sometimes impossible in Russia), but don't count on that one, and get your ISIC done right now. I have no idea where you could get an ISIC in Moscow. I hope you'll find museums interesting!  |

Thanks for your advice! Unfortunately I can't speak Russian and can only bring those russian phrasebooks and point at the words I wanna use.
Now I'll quickly go apply for my ISIC card then. It'll cost a bomb w/o student discounts! |

| just in case anyone else comes across this late: just returned from russia and used my student ID from my U.S. University (not ISIC) and received all student discounts: was still more than if you were a russian student, but much better than the usual foreigner rate. I don't see any advantage to getting an ISIC card for russia travel. |

I traveled to Russia with an ISIC back in 2000 and it was widely accepted. In fact, I don’t remember any case in which it was not accepted.
An ISIC currently costs U$ 15 in Brazil and since everything in Brazil is totally corrupt, anyone that wants it gets it, regardless of being a student or not. |

I didn't try it at the Hermitage, but my experience is that any card with a photo on it may be accepted as a student card in Russia, as long as the text is illegible to the cashier.. |

Of course you can get discounts without ISIC, but not always. I've managed without and with one. Excactly they even don't ask for your studentcard if you look like a student, atleast in my experience. Besides, sometimes a little ISIC card is good, my absolute favourite record store in St. Pete gives discounts for ISIC-holders I think that the greatest advantage out of the plastic ISIC one still gets in the rest of the Europe: in some countries they just wont believe that you're a student without that piece of plastic. Though it might just be about the language: my mother tongue is not the most widely spoken language, so probably cashiers in Russia as well as is Germany might not understand a single word from the studentcard I got from my home university. |

| I just used an old student card of me, which expired in 2005, but at the Hermitage they gave me free entrance with it.... therfore: just have a plastic card with your photo and some logo and 'student card' on it works very fine! |

I bought mine from a travel office. You might find helpful information from the website: http://www.isic.org/sisp/index.htm
But I honestly doubt that you would need it, if you already have a English language student card. |
