There are some protected forests and parks. But the protection is not enforced as strongly as you'd see anywhere in Canada or the US. They get more strict during the dry seasons when it comes to picnics or brushfires. But in general, many lakes have no fish in them because it's all been cought. And the pollution, especially in the large cities, destroyed a lot of animal life in the past 10-20 years. I just think due to the other problems, the issue of protection has not received the attention it probably deserves. |

So I assume there's no fisheries programs, like restocking. Thats too bad. Did they have the same kind of fish as Canada, trout, pike, perch?
Do they have proper campgrounds like mine, with showers, bathrooms, powered sites? Or do they have to rough it? Actually I was wondering if camping is popular, do most people have weekends off? |

| Russia seems to be more of the countryhouse/dacha nation than a camping one and during weekends (sat and sun) there is an exodus of city-people to the dachas in the countryside. Walks in the forest, mushroom-picking, gardening, fishing, making shahslik over firewood etc... |

I have noticed that from the people I talk to. They always say they like to walk in nature. Are these small country houses, or regular sized homes? Whatever regular size is over there. Are there a lot of horses there for riding? |

Usually, those country homes are not large, especially by suburban Canadian/US standards. Remember, Russia is not a wealhy country. People there are, in my opinion, are much more social. People love picnics and camping. But camping is much less organized. The organized private campsites begin to get built now - but it's mostly for those with money (i.e., not for the regular folk). So, in the summer that is not that warm, except for July, people just spend time at lake beaches, doing "shahlik" (shish kebab over a fire), barbeque, spending time with friends. It's very common to combine that with songs by the fire with a guitar. And vodka flows like a river quite often
People go camping with the tents too. Again, it's much less organized and the forests are much more wild in a sense that you just set your tent anywhere you want and no one cares. You can drive down the highway, just stop anywhere you want and go into the forest - someone you cannot imagine in the US where you're likely to see state/federal park or a private property virtually everywhere. |

The Baikalsk Pulp and Paper Mill is a processing plant that produces wood pulp
and cellulose at the south end of Lake Baikal. According to sources, like the
protesters who criticize the plant - claim that industrial fluids like chlorine
are being leaked into Baikal's waters from the plant. That's the only negative info
I've found . . . but fortunately, this bad news is very minimal concerning Lake Baikal. The environmental conditions of Baikal are far more pristine than most places (compared to a multitude of other natural resources around the world).
It's the deepest, most ancient freshwater lake in the world. The environment
around Baikal is host to many different types of wildlife. There's also a good population of
Omul fish, which is very popular smoked and sold at train stations. |

Russians love to get out of their apartmentsm in the summer monthd and visit nature - na prirodu, to pick berries, gather mushrooms or fish in the lakes and rivers but unfortunately they are very poorly educated in terms of conservation and ecologhy and will keep any fish they catch even if it is tiny it will be taken home for the cat. Consequently no large fish seem to exist these days. Empty vodka bottles and other assorted rubbish abound on the lake shores and roadside and no one seems to notice. This is a real shame as the forests and rivers are beautiful.
The country houses vary from very basic wooden structures to 2 or 3 story brick or rendered concrete and every available bit of land around them is taken up with the vegetable garden, mostly potatoes with some cabbage, tomato and cucumber plants also.
Horses for riding are not that common. |

There're plenty of horses to ride both inside and outside the city, though it's far nicer to ride in the countryside. Horse rental or lessons are very reasonably priced here. I used to live near the edge of Moscow, so getting out to ride was really convenient. Unfortunately it's not a luxury for me anymore... but after I found a club in the city I got into dressage and jumping which meant I tolerated cantering around in in circles.
Just gotta share... my favourite hobby...

Horses are great. We have 5, and 7 more are on the way for trail riding at the campground next year.

I meant to ask this before, but what are the favourite sports in Russia, I'm sure hockey is up there, but what else?
Spicey, it says you made a post here, but it doesn't show it. What happened? |

| hmm... soccer? Gymnastics, swimming, synchronised swimming, wrestling, boxing, dance-sport, figure-skating, skiing and other winter sports... I suppose if you think about which Olympic sport which Russia excels in, you can get a pretty good idea. |
