I wanted to know at what age Russians can, or do, retire? And is there any sort of pension for them? How do you get by after you stop working?

I was told that pensions are very low like $100.00 a month

yorbcbud: Russia is still by and large a relatively poor country and is not a good place to retire for many reasons. Most of this forum's posters seem to have retired into obscurity.

Russians are eligible to collect pensions at age 55 (the government is considering raising that age). The standard pension is approximately 3,200 rubles a month. That's a little over $100. Shocked

Not enough even for food....This is the reason one sees so many elderly people (mostly women) selling anything and everything on roadsides and street corners: one must find supplementary income in old age or one will starve.

An expat friend and I were talking about it once, this person has lived here in Russia over 10 years. She was talking about her future here, she said "That's the thing about Russia, you can never stop working and retire in this country. It just isn't possible."

Russia's aged population is in dire straits indeed.

She said dhe got an e-mail or her friend saw that there was talk about her or something and anyway she got pissed at me and went off! Said it was over. Then this just led into to weeks of hell. And now she says she wants a break and that it's over. And then of course it comes out that she met someone else-but says this happened since the e-mail because she was pssed so I don't know. Long Distance relationships are tough so I guess to be expected. It was a year of good times though.

Yeah it's a bummer and I of course being so far away can't really do anything. Of course I didn't keep my cool either and really pissed her off even more. Who knows what will happen now as she is traveling again for the next month. Hopefully she'll chill out and come to her senses. But I doubt it.

Yeah, real bummer. But maybe this sort of thing about your gf (even if you think it's over) should just be kept to PMs. That person may be still digging for dirt to fling!
