Ok, we want to go from Moscow to Suzdal to St Peterburg. Hotel accommodation Moscow (4 nights), apartment St Peterburg (5nights). If I get an invite though an agency, will the hotel in Moscow register my visa and is this registration valid for the entire trip?
If the hotel issues the invitation (rather than an agency) does this stop me staying in an apartment, as I cannot prove to the consulate that I have hotel accommodation booked for the entire trip.
Would the consulate recognise an apartment as legitimate accommodation on a tourist visa?
by the way great website and support |

If I understood you correctly, you will be staying in a hotel in Moscow but not in St. Petersburg. Here is how this usually works. You have to register your passport in each city that you visit. If you have a hotel reservation, the hotel will register your passport for you. If you are not staying in a hotel, you have to register your passport with OVIR.
Regardless of who actually issues the invitation, that is just to get you to Russia. Your visa will not indicate where you are staying. The problem comes when you leave the country, they way question you as to why you did not register your passport for the entire trip and they can fine you.
The whole passport registration thing is really just a formality and a complete pain in the neck. Last year I went to Russia on a tourist visa and never registered my passport as I stayed with a friend. No one noticed but I don't know that I would recommend this to anyone else. Contact the agency that you are considering going through and just tell them what you want to do. In many cases you can pay a small fee and they will arrange to have your passport registered for you. It is just a stupid stamp so it is not a big deal. In many cases they can set something up. I don't know if it is exactly legal but it is likely less illegal than not getting registered at all. |
