So as not to wreck darthvader's topic any further. Vitalsigns, I was interested in your comment:

Yeah, the muslim influence there becomes stronger with each new day. I am Russsian myself, so it is kinda sad to see. Tatars and Russians used to live in harmony, now the Tatars claim that the Russians oppressed them from being true Tatars. I am not sure if it is true.... although, who didn't the Russians oppress through the history?

I went there about 10 months ago. I haven't enjoyed many smaller Russian cities but really loved Kazan and recommend it as an alternative to the Golden Ring towns for any tourist.

I was interested in the harmony between Russians and Tatars. I didn't ask any Russians about it but I asked a couple of Tatars. One guy said there were no problems at all - that they were basically the same people and that he even had a Russian wife, as do many others. However, he did seem to become more guarded when talking about this topic.

Another girl made some contradictory remarks. See here:

Scroll down to the paragraph below the museum photo. So what's your take on it? The Tatars did seem to be very proud of their heritage. Does it go further than that? Any other impressions of modern Kazan as compared to the good old days? It's one of my favourite Russian cities so I'd be keen to hear about it.

greg222 I believe it is an eternal struggle encompassing people who, at one point, were subjugated to another group of people. We, as Russians, never saw it that way, but the Tatars did.

Back in 1994, in my hometown we had small meetings (demonstrations as we call them) of Tatars on the streets. Kind of on and off. They would be standing there with green flags, banners: some in Russian, some in Tatar and still some in Arabic.

It was a weird experience, because some of them openly accused the Russians for oppressing their culture and that the time came for them to become a united Tatar nation. During that time the Tatar National Union was formed.

Then, around 1995-96 we started hearing an outcry among muslims that Tatar faith should be resurrected. (Tatars in their majority used to be nominal muslims). A couple of mousques were built. Imams from Turkey and some Arabic nations came to start schools (medreses) for Tatar kids.

Currently it looks rather quiet, but my hunch is underneath of that stuff their's still restlessness among some Tatars since they have to send their kids to russian schools and uni(s). Some Tatars are not really fond of Russians in general and vise versa. After all Tatarstan is about 60% Tatar.

I hope Tatars in Tatarstan will not venture out to accept the conservative forms of Islam. Because once they do - it's bound to bring nothing but trouble. Just like that type of Islam does all over the world. We'll see.

Yes...if islamofacism gets a hold of Tartarstan then all hell could break loose. Imagine Chechnya, Tartarstan, and then say all the other muslim former USSR countries...Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgystan, etc. etc. Revolting against Russia...huge problem for sure. Actually I had a history Teacher in High School who presented this scenario...ouch!

Just to add to my post up there. I just read that the citizens of Turkey expressed their opinion: "We do not want to have anything to do with the f*cked up radical islam in our country. We want radical islam out!"

I wish that the citizens of Tataria would express the same wish.

PS Some innocent people were killed in Turkey by some f*cked up radical muslim beasts several days ago. This is my verdict: If you truly believe that Koran is a book from Allah you WILL become a f*cked up radical muslim some day. Do not kid yourself you will not.
