Hi there, I am soon to enter Russia from Mongolia. Would just like some clarification on the horror stories that I keep hearing?

From rude and tough borders to fine hungry cops, I feel like as a young single male from the West I will be picked out. Especially since some clown spilt water on my visa and made some marks, I re-confirmed with the embassy and they said it was still fine as everything was still readable, but I can see the border officials kicking up a fuss, and cops will clearly jump on it as well.

I hope this country is worth it! What is the correct thing for me to do/say if someone comes along and tries to fine me? How much are these bogus fines anyway, any stories?

Guess I am just looking for some reassurance. Hope the beer is good.

If you walk around looking like a victim you will become a victim. Nothing surer. If all your documents are in order then you have nothing to fear.

In Moscow you are more likely to be stopped for a document check than anywhere else, but again if all is in order they have nothing to hold you for. I have found that keeping a small amount of money separate, say a couple of 100 ruble notes can greatly speed up the questioning process if you are in a hurry to catch a train or something. Don't give in too easily though.

And yes the beer is good and there is plenty of it.
