I will be going to Russia to work for a year, and will soon be applying for a 1-year multiple entry business visa.

However, the visa pages in my passport are almost finished, and I will have to apply for a new passport. once I am in Russia. (I cannot apply before I go, because it takes threee months to get a passport.)

How will the change of passport affect my Russian visa, and will it involve me in any trouble or expense?

Bob,

If you do change your passport while in Russia, the embassy won't put your visa into the new passport. So you'll actually lose your visa, and will have to get an exit one, and it's expensive. To say nothing about the duration of your visa... you won't be able to use the invitation you have now to apply for a new visa, so you'll have to wait for an invitation, and then get a new visa. And no, you can't apply for a new invitation in advance, because your new passport details will be needed and you don't have the passport yet.

I've heard they do put old visas into the new passports - but only for work visas as far as I know, and business visa is a different one.

In some countries you can apply for a new passport without giving up your old one. If your country allows this then that would solve your problem.

I know that the British government will provide special services like this in the case of a person who must renew their passport while abroad. My former boss travelled every week or so and could not surrender his passport for several weeks for a renewal to be processed. Because of these extenuating circumstances he was given a special express service. I suggest that you explain the details of your situation clearly and ask if you can get express delivery on a new passport.
