Hello,

Could anyone share their views/ advice regarding how safe it is for an Indian to travel to Russia as a tourist. I know that having a brown skin, even dressing up like a russian will not help. I had met some russians/ ukrainians in germany and I felt pretty much comfortable with them. How is the situation in Russia? (incase of Moscow/Spb or other small cities in general). All those internet results are scary. However, I am not going to the caucaus region or to the siberia/ extreme south, just interested in the western region.

thanks!

I have not been to Russia. May be you have to compromise on food. Moscow and St.ptsbrg are very expensive places.

I wish that your journey to make you feel happy. make sure you didn't travel with high cash. you can take travelers cheque or credit cum debit cards.

Robbery is there everywhere. so you can avoid taking expensive items like camcorder or you can substitute with your camera cell phone. have your travel plan well prepared along with climatic conditions.

Great! Does it take long to re-adjust to earth's conditions after landing?

Speaking about Indians in Russia. I recently saw at least 4 Indians staying my hotel in Moscow. Also, there were a few walking around touristic St Petersburg areas last summer.

Forget traveller's cheques. Take at least two credit cards (eg. MC and Visa), ATM card and/or debit card. Functioning ATMs are everywhere across Russia's major cities.

Taking a camcorder is not a problem. Quality HD camcorders are not too expensive these days anyway. Many people use these in Russia, especially tourists. However, like with all valuable items, in any country in the world, don't be careless with them. Then, everything will be fine.

Store your passport/visa/migration card in a deep undergarment pocket. Don't keep all your credit cards, etc on you in the same wallet/pocket/place.

"Always" have some cash (Rubles) with you. Initially, Euros or US dollars as you enter Russia (exchange later at Travelex into Rubles if necessary).

Why always some cash? Because of your constant need for taxi and metro services + the fact that not all shops, restaurants, etc allow credit cards (true - even in Moscow and St Petes).

If you travel to provincial Russia, cash is even more important. You can't rely on credit cards for every supermarket, restaurant or general shop in provincial cities. However, credit card usage is generally pretty good. Even so, I had a couple of awkward moments hunting for the nearest ATM as my goods to be purchased were held for me at a store.

So, use the available ATMs as regularly as you need.

camcorders are expensive, thats why i say they might be stolen. there are lot of cases where cell phones, notebooks and camera's stolen easily.

Thats true medical students from South INDIA who went to St.Petersburg for MBBS was killed by a fellow students who are younger to him. But the local police have not done a good job in that.

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best.
