I will be travelling to Novgorod in January and will be there for a week, and then on to St. Petersburg. What are the best sites to see while in Novgorod?

I didn't like Novgorod that much... you can see it all in 2 hours. I'd choose Pskov over Novrorod.

Novgorod, veliky, is a marvellous city. I recommand the Detinets in the Kremlin (drink Medavuxa) and all the walkings in the center. There is something from the ancient time in there (as I can imagine it).
I love this town....

I just spent three months in Novgorod, which can be seen as pretty boring. Just two hours on the other hand doesn't do her justice either.

you got to be fascinated by ancient russian history and have a liking for religion. If so Novgorod is the! place to go.

things to see:

- yes medavyxa ... no doubt..

the kremlin and the sophia cathedral are living history. I recommend patricipating a church service there. 10.00 and 18.00 (monday and tuesday no evening service) just stand in the back and listen to the quire. don't worry you can walk out anytime. No one will expect anything from you ( except avoid being stupid, waving around videocamera's)
the kremlin is open till 0.00 When you want to live hitchcocks moviue 'the birds' I recommend taking a scroll between the trees. Literally hundreds of crows swarm in the treetops.
From the kremlin to yaroslav's court there is a foot bridge.. the view of the river volchov and lake ilmen is magnificent. In the distance you can see yuriev monastery, which you can also visit (at the same time you can check the open air museum of wooden architecture.
There are many churches with famous frescoes dating back to 1300 the ones from feofan grek or the ones in the monastery of Antonius the Roman. A good overview of russian icon painting can be found in the museum in the kremlin.

Russia's history in a nutshell is the monument to a 1000 year Russia in the centre of the kremlin.

i enjoy waking around the markets. There is a small one besides the bridge named afetr aleksandr Nevskii. and a more interesting and bigger one just outside to old earthen wall surrounding the city in the direction towards yuriev monastery (sorry forgot the street name)

in the north there are various little churches in villages as well as Xutynskaya monastery.

Pskov is also interesting. The one also does not have to exclude the other. The bus to pskov from novgorod is only four hours. An experience that will also show what russia is outside the city. Pskov has a lighter and younger athmosphere.

enjoy!

I'm going there in July/August - can anyone suggest anything relaxing for a hot summers day in the city?

Most of the things you'll want to see are in the Kremlin - St. Sophia, the Millenium Monument, the history museum - or just outside it, like the Alexander Nevsky monument. If you have time, though, the nearby Yuriev Monastery is worth a trip, as is Staraya Russa.
