I plan to be in St. Petersburg from June 17 to June 21. I am thinking of taking the bus from St. Petersburg to Tallinn on June 21, however I could take the train to Helsinki. Is the bus service good? I heard the price was only $11.00.

My parents said the bus was awful and took about 8-9 hours

I took the Eurolines bus last April from St. Petersburg to Tallinn and it was quite okay. It took about 7 hours in total, including about 2 hours we spent with all the border formalities. The price was something like 11,20 euro. You can see the schedule here.

If you plan on going to Tallinn anyway (otherwise you would go from Helsinki, right?), definitely take the bus from St. Petersburg. It's way cheaper than the train and ferry combined (about 70 euro total), and it takes less time.

I took Eurolines SPB to Tallinn last summer, ticket was about 11.USD. Nice air conditioned bus, quick stops on borders at Ivangorod and Narva, another short stop in Johve and then to Tallinn. Their schedules are down to a t. Right on time. Very comfortable ride. Buy your tickets at a small store on a side street near at the Baltisky vokzal. Just walk past the little cafe on the corner down a small sidestreet and hte office is on your left. Don't make hte mistake of going to the main Russian bus terminal off of Ligovsky prospekt where the sight of dilapidated buses and long lines might put you off. Alot of Russians didn't seem to know about the Eurolines office, so don't be put off if no one else doesn't know what you're talking about. try www.eurolines.ru.
