Does anyone have any unusual or hair-raising ancedotes worth sharing that involve driving in the cities or countryside in Russia? Laughing What kinds of driving habits and behavior on the roads have you witnessed or maybe been involved in yourself?

Any personal accounts, particularily from the WTR members, who live there now or anyone who has visited in the past, would be interesting to hear about. Razz

Once me and my uncle were going home. We were running late so he decided to cut off and turn where he was not supposed to. Well, it used to be forbidden but then the sign disappeared, so everybody used this turn just 'cause it's much quicker and you don't need to make a long detour. Nobody ever got caught or pulled over, so many people (just like my uncle) assumed it was okay. Besides he has done it before. Anyway, he made this turn and the guy who was going behind us had to break suddenly 'cause he didn't expect my uncle to stop at the turn (evidently he was one of those who never used it before, maybe he was afraid he would get caught). Well, the got really mad 'cause he had to break suddenly. He stopped his car in the middle of the road, chased our car for a little bit, my uncle stopped and the guy started beating the crap out of my uncle's car - he was hitting the windows, the hood, the headlights. My uncle got out of the car and started talking to him. The guy tried to get into the fight, luckily some of his friends came by and calmed him down. I was so scared. It turned out that the guy was drunk, and we even remembered his lisence plate number... Smile

Well this incident isn't really hair-raising or scary... just funny.

Me and my friends were driving to out of nowhere to this resort outside Nizhny Novogorod last witner. It had gotten dark and temps went down to about -8 deg C. One lonely road surrounded by seemingly endless and people-less snow-covered fields. And standing by the road was one lone guy frantically flagging our car down. We thought it was unusual for anybody to be out in the middle of the field in the middle of nowhere (where did he *walk* from?). So we stopped and asked the freezing guy what happened.

"Well, can you believe, my friends and I were coming back from the bar. We stopped and some of us took a leak in the field, but when *I* came back, they were gone!"
"They forgot about you and left you behind?!" we asked.
"Yes!"

We decided to drive him to the resort where his friends might have shown up (and where, of couse, it was warmer).

We drove on, and later encountered another car coming in the other direction. It turned out that it was the guy's runaway party of friends who finally realised that one of their company was missing. Smile
