I'm thinking of travelling from Japan to Moscow via a ferry to Vladivostok and the Trans-Siberian. I want to travel in September and would really appreciate any advice on safety/what tickets to buy. Some of my friends think I'm crazy and are pretty worried. I wasn't but now I'm doubting myself. Am I? Does Harriet think so? |

Jen C,
At least Harriett's experiences are first hand and not the "I heard from a friend of my best friends uncle's thrice divorced and 67543 times removed next door neighbour" crap....
That being said, other solo female travellers who at one time frequented the board have done so without problems whatsoever. The provodnik/nitsa is your friend and will move you to another cabin/car if your cabin mates creep you out. Don't leave your valuables alone, money next to skin and share your food and pick up more along the way and enjoy....

Overseas_expat,
Sorry, Have I or Jen C read the post? I did...which was why I mentioned the first hand experience....damn shame but I guess it has to happen to someone, sometime. Pity it happened to Harriet.
Regards

Hi Jen C,
I just finished travelling on the trans-siberian... single 24year old girl. I did however prebook the trans-siberian part of my journey before i left Australia.
I had to share with some frightening fellows a couple of times - but there wasnt anything i couldnt handle.
Cheers

I met one girl from Canada in St. Petersburg, going to Beijing by train, over Ekaterinburg and Irkutsk. She didn't seem particularly scared and I don't think she should have been. Trains seem relatively safe in Russia and I actually enjoy travelling on them. Buying tickets at the station is another story |
