Dear WTR
Whilst in I am secretly pleased that you have used my comments about queue 'technique' at the Russian Embassy in London, I fear I shall have to join the queue even earlier than before, now that you have actually used this advice. Such is the price of 'progress' and 'kudos'

PS The following text is wrong in my opinion...

If you are traveling to Russia with your own vehicle, you will get a temporary permit from the customs to be able to use the car legally in Russia. It is usually given for 1 month, but you can extend it at local customs offices.

Vremmeni VVosd documents are issued valid for 10 working days only.
I spent a good 10 minutes 'debating' the subject with the Customs Officer, but he would not change the dates for me.
At least this was true in August 2005 at Nuijamaa/Brusnichnoye for a person entering russia on a 'private' visa valid for 2 months. Next year, I shall try Valimaa/Torfino again using a private visa.

Title covers the subject? I don't want to be rude, but we would make it easier for ourselves and others if we paid a second of extra attention to the 'Subject' field of our posts... :S

Yes, I would appreciate seeing this advice updated too, as I will be driving in, via the same route used by Dittrich in 2005, this summer. Based on HIS advice, my family have booked ferries that will only see us staying in Russia for 10 business days, ie 12 days including weekends. It would have been an annoyance to find that WTR's advice was wrong at the border while trying to debate it with a Customs Officer.

Regards,
Michael

Dear Rick
Sorry about the heading. 4/10 must try harder Eh?! Wink
Seriously, the time limit of 10 days was also experienced by 'Simeon' from sweden travelling on the same route as myself the previous year.
Now we all know things in Russia vary from place to place and month to month. All I'm saying is that you might get 10 days - like we did. Saying people will get 30 days doesn't convey the uncertainty and conflicting experiences of people.
There is in my opinion an urgent need for WTR to clarify whether the 10 days is for everyone at all border stations OR whether it depends on the location, type of visa, inside leg measurement...People make expensive bookings based on this information. I will make my contribution by doing some more investigation next year and take the trouble to write down everything.

Yes, it's very good that you give such quality feedback and information on this subject. Maybe Dmitri should consider hiring you. If he can afford to... Wink

Actually it depends on the visa, where you're crossing the border etc.

I guess there's not a fixed rule, but from your posts I see that they give it for 10 days to foreigners, and 2-4 weeks for Russians (that's what my friend told me).

I live in St. Petersburg and am taking my car (New York State registration--that's a whole different story for anyone who is interested) out to Finland via Nujimaa/Brusnichnoe on Monday as the Vremmeniy Vvoz permit, along with my visa, expires ina couple of weeks. I have asked the State University who is providing my visa support to write an official letter on my behalf to the customs officials with a special request to give me a temporary permission of one month rather than ten days. The reason for this is that I will be coming in on a new visa and to register it properly, ie through the institution that issued the support, and not by simply paying some travel agency to register you in some hotel where you have never stayed, takes over 10 working days due to it being a year long multiple entry, also due to the bureaucratic nature of the university and the OVIR office it works with. Thus I would not be able to get my registration back before the 10 day Vvremmeniy Vvoz permit expires. Additionally I am planning to go to Germany by plane two days after I get back from Finland, which means i can't give in my passport and migration card right away etc. etc.

Anyway I will report back and let you know if my attempts to persuade the border officials to extend the permit are successful...perhaps having my 7yr old daughter with me will soften their hearts somewhat...
