I have a question. I have travelled quite a bit - but the safety thing in Russia is a bit concerning. Not in Moscow or St Pete.
I am going to visit Rostov and then go to Taganrod. I am a fan of Checkhov and wantto see his home, museum, etc...
I am told by a few friends that it's dangerous for a foreighner in this part of the country bcause of kidnappings?
Does anyone have any first hand experience of safety or knowing of anything like this happening in this particular region?

You may find it wise to check advice from your Embassy The british Embassy advises against its subjects travelling there and other causican regions due to terrorist activities.

I am English and have lived in Rostov for over 3 years now---- never had any problems ( touch wood ) and have even been to Tag and the museum

obviously like in any city of the world trouble exists if you go looking for it--- common sense prevails------
What nationality are you

Hi, some more details if you don't mind.
Taganrog is quite a small town, I think that you're likely to feel there extremely safe. As for Rostov ... just keep in mind that you're abroad, I think that there're not so many people speak nglish, so the best way for you is to create plan beforehand visiting Rostov and then just follow it.
