I do not know the answer, however I have just travelled from Korea to the UK using theBeijing Moscow train.
You can pre book a ticket with CITS (Chinese Tourist authority) and pick it up before departure from their office, they give the ticket at cost price unlike the booking authority.
You can have 4 berth compartments or two (1st class), it's worth paying the extra on the trans mongolian,
