I am planning to cross the border from China to Russia and continue by train to Moscow. I still haven't decided whether to do the Trans Manchurian, or cross to Vladivostok and do the real Trans Siberian from there.

Does anyone have any experiences with this? I know that on the Trans Manchurian you can go from Harbin to Manzhouli, cross the border to reach Zabailask and then continue from there. Is this easy or recommended?

Or what about getting to Vladivostok from China. I'm still not sure how this is done or whether it is easy.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you have a lot of time, I think it would definitely be a more interesting experience to try to get to Vladivostok first and then do the "real" Trans-Siberain to Moscow. However, you might have to go the same railway from Chita to Vladivostok and then back to Chita, which, considering that it's about 2 days each way, can be a bit boring. But then you'll see Vladivostok, which is quite different from all other Russian cities.
I guess, you should just decide whether you want to spend extra 4-8 days to see just Vladivostok, and if not, take the Trans-Mongolian through Mongolia to Ulan-Ude and stop there for a few nights, it's a great town. Then you can go on to Irkutsk (which is 8 hours from U-U) and then - Krasnoyarsk and Novosibirsk. So, it will be a lot of things to see...
