The best time to go is January - March, the lake is covered with ice and snow and it's very beautiful...

What to do....

Arrow Walking around and enjoying the snow (anywhere, but especially Olkhon island is really beautiful)
Arrow Skiing, snowboarding (near Slyudyanka or Kultuk)
Arrow Ice-fishing (near Olkhon island or near Listvyanka)
Arrow Trekking over Baikal lake
Arrow Snowmobile riding
Arrow Dog-sledging

and much more...

For a complete list, see our guide to Baikal lake at http://waytorussia.net/Baikal

Thanks Dmitri. Is it easy to find people to take us for these activities (ie the ice fishing, dog sledding etc) in Irkutsk, and is it very expensive?

Yes, there are a lot of travel companies in Irkutsk that can organize these activities for you, as well as private guides.
Although generally they all may be able to organize something for you, it's better to use the services of professional companies and individuals, whose services are reliable and you know that you'll get quality service and you'll have an English-speaking guides.

We have a database of the companies in Baikal area who we know are reliable (they have different prices as well) and if you send me a private message or an email at dimas@waytorussia.net describing what kind of activity you would like, I will be able to recommend you a few companies.

I should tell you that we get commissions from these companies, which helps us support and develop WayToRussia.Net (and travel an put online travel guides to destinations such as Baikal) -- but the price you get is the same as when you contact the company directly.
This does not in any way make us biased, because we always choose to work with the best companies.
