Hi,

I wanna do the trip with friend in october 2005. after looking around a lot it seems to me i could just book the trains and not worry about the tours. Is it quite easy to get accomodation in places like lake biakal and ulan bataar, moscow and st petersburg on the day of arrival. Also is it easy to explore lake biakal on own, or set up tour when i arrive?

also why do the train prices shoot up in price when i try to book a multi-stop trip instead of direct? and is there anyway to book cheaper?

cheers

i am no expert on the transsiberian railroad, but i think the price difference lies in the fact that you can't actually book a multi-stop train ticket.
in this case you mention the ticket will probably consist of separate tickets for the different stretches you will travel.

remember to get out of the train frequently... despite all the nice carpets on the hallways it is just a means of transport, not developed as tourist destination.

In October you won't have any problems finding rooms because you are outside the peak season.

But it might be a little early to go ice-fishing on Lake Baikal. I don't think the ice will be very thick that early in the winter.

there's no ice at all on Baikal in October Shocked ... 'cos it's not winter, it's autumn...

though I think October is not the best time for travelling in Siberia - it's pretty cold, rainy and windy. September is much better. or, yif you want to see (and to feel Very Happy ) winter - choose November!

anyway, I would rather buy tours, not travel alone. here are the reasons:
- accomodation is always "waiting for you" and you gon't have to look for it. and who knows what "room" will you find if you do it yourself? of course Russians are very friendly, but not all of us Embarassed
- tour guide will show you much more of Russia that you can see yourself. excursions are always very interesting. and you can book a couple of days for walking around the place all by yourself.

good luck!
