This is some of the translation work I do to try to not only improve vocabulary, but see cases, etc. in context. I'm really pressed for time today and would appreciate some help with this (and yes, I realize this is 1st grade level stuff ):
Many thanks in advance! |

For whom?
For my son.
And how much should I send?
Well, nearly 5 or 6 poods:
He's not able to eat more
He's just a little guy
And then phoned
The Crocodile
And asked crying:
-- My, darling
Send me kaloshi
To me, to my wife and to Totosha
-- Stop, was it you
whom I sent last week
two pairs of perfect kaloshes
-- Ah, those which you've sent
Last week
We've already eaten
And we're waiting
When you'll send
by the next supper
Dozen
Of new and sweet kaloshes
It's a poem for children author is really drunk... lol We've studied it in the kindergarden probably
Actually there are two dificult words "pood" and "kaloshi"
Pood is an old russian unit of measure
Kaloshi is also old russian shoes which are usually made of rubber and protect from water btw, Nokia (quite famous corp) firstly was producing kaloshi... |

Camrade, you are, as we say in my country, "the man." Thanks very much! VERY much!
And yes, I know it's children's poems, but my Russian teacher uses them to help me read better and to improve my vocabulary, and I must say they seem to be working. And kaloshi has an English counterpart in "galoshes," although we certainly have little use for those in Florida.
Thanks again! |

No worries. It would look awfully suspicious to have such a fledgling Russian student translate it perfectly, anyway! |

I admitted to my Russian teacher that I'd had help from a native speaker with this, but she seemed oblivious and continued to praise me for my "poetic translation."
On the other hand, yesterday I feel like I made real progress, learned a lot of new words, and I'm starting to feel like Russian is "coming together for me."
Thanks again, Camrade, you're a scholar and a gentleman! |
