Hello folks! I'm from Tennessee and I am interested in learning Russian. I figured I'd find some forums and get some information on learning Russian from people who already know it. This is the first time learning a different language that has a totally different alphabet (I've studied spanish for about a year know).
Any CD's, tapes, websites or books you all would like to recommend to me?
Thanks,
Shane G.

Hi Shane
The very best way to learn is in a class (I started just a few months ago), but I realise you might not have one nearby.
There's a wealth of info on the internet...just type "russian language" into Google (www.google.com).
Two I like are:
http://www2.gwu.edu/~slavic/golosa.html
http://masterrussian.com/
An excellent book/CD set for solo learning is 'Take Off In Russian', published by Oxford University Press (www.oup.com). ISBN 0-19-860311-8 (book/CD set). We use 'Teach Yourself Russian' in class, but I wouldn't really recommend it for solo use!
Listen to as much spoken Russian as you can. The Voice of Russia website is useful (www.vor.ru/Audio/audio_eng.phtml). There are live and recorded radio broadcasts. You won't understand much at first, but it's helpful to hear the tones and rhythm of the language.
Happy learning!

good luck with the Russian, its like riding a bike..
all I can recommend is get a VCR or DVDr, tape the `normal, silly stuff' and talk it over with a friend. ( offer them 10 dollars an hour ). Use it.
Buy an electric dictionary and learn 2 stiff words a day ( business or difficult words ) . This gets you going quicker than any book. The endings and other stuff take care of themselves and at some point the stiff words and the conversational stuff meet in the middle.

| For most of us, self-study will only get you so far... it got me most of the basics down, but I couldn't progress further than that without having to find a professional tutor. from then on one can make some real progress. I hope you can find a class or private tutor in your area. Good luck! |

Talking with others may be helpful. I use a voice chat program called Skype http://skype.com/. There are quite a few Russian people that use the program who want to learn English and they are often willing to help. If you sign up with Skype, then go to the website http://www.jyve.com/, which is a network of Skype users. You can post a profile explaining that you are interested in learning Russian. I have found several people to practice Russian with in this way.
Hope this helps. |

Hi People!
This forum is Real good. What I was doing today was reading peoples simple postings and then trying to translate them into good old po-angeliski(english). Its actually a lot of fun.
What I recommend to our new friend is get a dictionary, and practise translating and then try and memorise the words that are used a lot - u learn all the USEFUL words first like I, me, hi, you.
Russian is a very cool language - I'm also looking for a nice girl to practice Russian with, but I suppose I guy will also be ok if I cant find one. |

You still didn't post a link, Rob. I'llcheck out some of these resources, as I have a LONG way to go and I'd like to be able to speak a lot more before I show up in August. |

Hey Welcome EL,
So u going to Russia that sounds really cool.
I also really want to go and visit there as well.
What I was saying was THIS site has some cool stuff
in other words http://www.waytorussia.net/WhatIsRussia/Russian.html
and then just check out the links on that page.
I found thenm VERY useful.
Well as I was saying I'm finding this language a lot of fun,
what I really would like now is to talk to actual Russians.
I have just got my radio license so I will try when I can get a rig
that can do the HF bands required to go to Russia.
There is always Russian morse code which is a peice of cake |
