|
|
| Hello - I wondered whether anyone could offer me any advice on this. I'm currently travelling alone on the transsiberian (I've just reached Irkutsk) and have been hassled by Russian men the whole journey. I have been in kupe's with three men all the way and am finding the incessant questioning, staring and even groping in the night, is slightly tainting my enjoyment of the trip. Is it rude to ask to be put in a kupe with women? Any tips would be very welcome. |

| It is possible to ask to change coupes. speak with the train conductor, perhaps offer some tips. a lot of conductors are women anyway so I'm sure they will understand. It is not rude if you ask politely. |

I'm not the tiniest bit surprised at how you've been treated. As a social whole, the Russian male culture is one of male chauvanist pigdom. Be glad you don't have to work for them because it gets worse in the workplace. I have heard all too many horifying stories from young women.
Absolutely explain your concern and ask to be reassigned. I'm betting you will be accommodated without any problem. Russian women know this problem well.
(Here's a babushka tip: carry a large umbrella ) |

there will almost always be one kupe with a family complete with a brawling kid and a babushka (for defense ). but that will sure keep those men out of the way.
good luck, let us know how it goes. |

| Harriet, take platskart. It may be dirty, smelly but as you are a single woman it is safer. |

| Thanks for the tips about travelling, don't think I can travel platskart to Mongolia but I'll definitely asked to be moved. Cheers! Way to Russia is far more helpful than Throntree..... |
