What are the roads in Russia like, in the cities, and in the country? How well are they maintained? Is there a lot of litter? Potholes?

One of Russian writers said: "Russia has to troubles - fools and roads". There are not a lot of good roads. Potholes are the main signs of our roads. Mainly if you see a good road it means that government goes here frequently.

Inside Moscow and Moscow region roads are still quite bearable, some parts even pretty well-mantained.

Now if you ask me it's the drivers who are the main problem. It's anarchy on roads here!

I recently bicycled ~2600km through Ukraine and southern Russia (http://www.bikerussia.com/2006). My observations for what I saw:

1. Road conditions vary a lot by oblast and sometimes by type of road. There are some nice modern smooth motorways and also areas with narrow roads with many potholes. Some places with glass on the road but I didn't see much litter.

2. Overall, roads I traveled in Russia were better than Ukraine and better than Indian or Chinese roads I've ridden; worse than many west European or Australian or American roads. There can be quite a bit of traffic around cities and still somewhat quiet in countrysides away from cities.

3. There was a fair amount of road construction and somewhat recent improvements to roads. Several of the particularly ugly roads were being upgraded.

4. Drivers were more courteous towards bicycles than drivers in the USA.

I didn't travel much through Moscow other really large cities. However, cycling through Samara, Kursk, Penza and mid-sized cities I found to be easier than a city of corresponding size in the US.

Quite right! I traveled the Moscow to Tver corridor frequently. The road was well kept until you pass Putin's mansion on the way. The rest of the road was made known by its pot holes. Some paths can be rightly called pot holes with bits of road sprinkled about. Wink

An example from western Siberia: the road between Omsk and Tara in february. The road seems only half as wide as in other times of the year and the holes get filled with stamped snow and ice. It actually seemed that people drove faster because of this.

Federal road M53 somewhere between Taishet and Tulun. It is the only road from Krasnoyarsk to Irkutsk.
