hallo all,
i have been planning my journey on the train from moscow to beijing for a month now when suddenly a russian friend is trying to discourage me telling me it is really dangerous and blah blah blah. i am rather suprised as i have read many tales of people who have been and generally they were interesting and happy ending stories! i am aware of the fact that like in any travel one has to be alert and not gallible but could people that have done it recently please tell me....is it ok or is a really dangerous trip???

Thanksss. LAA>

What is your Russian friend from? Is he still staying in Russia and in which part?

If you're talking about the major 'touristy' cities like Moscow and St. Petes... the short answer is: YOU'LL BE FINE.

For trans-sib journies, you'll be spending most of your time on trains. They are very safe. See other topics in the Trans-sib section.

Well you friend is probably not an experienced traveller or has never gone to that part of Russia yet. Don't forget Russia is very big, and I dare say a large number of Muscovites have never been to the places you've mentioned.

Muscovites always told me that anywhere outside of Moscow is dangerous but I don't think it's that true.

Just use common sense - you'll be traveling through desperately poor areas that normally don't see foreigners.
