Hi Folks,
I was thinking fo going to Russia when I finish my degree (June 2009). I'd like to work as say a cleaner [commercial or industrial] or similar for maybe a year or two in Russia (impossible to get those types of jobs here). However I'll be 34 years old (male). Would my age work against me in the Russian jobs market?

Well your age wouldn't work against you, but the local babushkas might.
You see lots of ads for cleaners in Russia but they are normally for females.
Uborschtisa.
However good on you for having a go, and who knows, you may find an employer who is looking for someone keen and out of the mould. |

There is, actually, a huge age discrimination in Russia.
I was in Russia for a year and a half. At one point I was thinking of getting a job. One day I came across an ad, where an interpreter was needed for a summer job in a local travel agency. They didn't even want to talk to me once I told them that I was 27 y.o. They said I'm too old for them, and that they were looking for someone under 20.  |

For job like that everyone wants youth and glamour to impress clients. This guy is talking about a cleaning job though. I haven't seen too many of those in the glamour stakes. |

Folks, thanks for the replies. It would help if I could get a response from a native Russian? When I say cleaner I would be thinking along the lines of industrial level. Maybe a Binman might be better?

How about about a British expat resident in Moscow. and I have been here for 4 years. And married to a Russian native.
If you're are looking for any cleaning job indusrial or otherwise, you will be competing with the local Russians. Are you fluent in Russian, otherwise forget it. And don,t expect to be able to afford accomadation.
Your only option is teaching English. |
