hi
i m arko. i will come russia this month. i will study here for five years. Should i bring some gift for my teachers and roommates. i don't have any idea about russian tradition of gift. what sort of gift would be prefered ?

Don't waste your time bringing gifts for the teachers... most of them won't care or be impressed. Like it or not, foreigners are looked down upon a great deal by professors at universities (not by all professors, of course, but many). Anyway, you'll probably have quite a few different professors, and giving each one of them a gift could end up being quite pricey.

I do think it would be a good idea to bring gifts for your roommates, however. I'd recommend you bring something that represents your home country - it doesn't have to be anything big or expensive. As the expression goes, it's the thought that counts! In a Russian dorm you usually have two - three people in a room, so you'd only need to buy a couple presents and you'd be good to go.

I wouldn't bring gifts until you leave Russia then you would know who you would appreciate your gifts. Very Happy
