1. You are still a "Russian citizen" and they don't care about your American citizenship.
2. They could detain you there for a long time.
3.. You could be considered a deserter if you left Russia for the US in the time of drafting.
4. Have money to pay them off with.
5. If you don't have money then be prepared to serve 2 years in the Russian military.
Some advice, if you own a house in the USA, cover your furniture and talk to your insurance company or your mortagage company before you leave.
You might not be back for two years. lol |

Of course I haven't, nor am I likely to. Furthermore that has nothing to do with the subject being discussed here.
The question originally asked was related to the process of renouncing citizenship and not the consequences of visiting Russia as a Russian citizen of conscriptable age.
Kolobed has made it abundantly clear on more than one occasion that he is well aware of what could befall him, and yet his question continues to generate replies concerning the aforesaid consequences and not the process of renouncing his citizenship.
Do you understand? |

Kolobed,
I know that my reply might be a bit too late, but… I did successfully renounce Russian citizenship a couple of years ago without going to Russia. What you need to do is find someone there who you can rely on and give that person a limited power of attorney to collect various documents on your behalf. One of my aunt’s friends was able to collect all of the docs I needed, but I did have to send her a lot of money to assure smooth collection of such documents… Once I submitted all of the documents to the Russian Consulate, it only took about 6 months to get official certificates. The process was really painless and I was pleasantly surprised the way consulate handled the case.
If there is a will, there is a way! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise…

What do you guys think of this bit?
статья 15д гласит, что:
" Не подлежат воинскому учету в военных комиссариатах, органах местного самоуправления и организациях граждане:
д) постоянно проживающие за пределами Российской Федерации"
"Persons permanently living outside of Russian Federation"
How does one prove then, that he is living permanently abroad? |

It works the other way around. The official proof that you are living permanently abroad is the stamp in your foreign passport. In order to get this stamp, you need to de-register at the local "Voenkomat". In practice, you do this together with de-registration at the local police office. You go to the police office, tell them that you are leaving Russia, and show them whatever they accept as a proof. A foreign passport or residence permit may be sufficient for them. They give you a letter to the military office with the request to de-register you there. You go to the military office, show them this letter, your "proof", and de-register. Then go back to police office and finish de-registration. |

Sounds like this guy is just a chicken and doesn't want to serve the country he came from. That makes me wanna PUKE!!!!!!!!
I fought for my country. I volunteered because I OWE it to my country to serve it!!!! I firmly believe even the USA should have a mandatory 2 years of service... Military or public.. Unless you have served, you don't get it... so don't bitch and say that is insane idea...
I respect very much anyone that serves their country in the military.. Yes, even the 'bad guys' because they, at least, do get it..
If you renounce your citizenship because you don't want to be put in the army.... you should stay out of Russia.. For that matter...get out of this country...
On a quick side note: I have a friend who is German. He came here for 3 months last summer. He begged and plead to find a way to move here. He even went and begged our military to allow him to serve. He already did 3 years in German army. And he thought if he could move the USA, that he owed the country to at least serve our military in his field, (EMT/medic/Nurse) And of course, the USA said no, they didn't want him.. Yet people like you get in?? makes me sick! |

| The only way to avoid army in this situation is to go to a Russian embassy in the US and formelly denounce your citizenship - i.e. оформи ПМЖ. I know a guy who went and got arested right in the airport. He was a citizen (27 years old). Also, they just passed a law in Russia that even if you are > 27 years old, they can still put you in jail until you are 40. It's not guaranteed, but I would not want to take this risk. Especially now, with all the action in Georgia...Good luck.. |
