I read of the stories like in the New York Times Travel letter section of a African-American man who was beaten by skinheads in Moscow while other Russians just watched. As a African-American who is planning to visit Moscow what steps to take to avoid not only the skinheads but the racist police as well? Like your replies.

I don't think it's too dangerous. You will be looked at for sure but it's out of curiousity (not so many black people in Russia Smile

It's like in any other big city (unfortunately): keep away from suburbs during the night, don't react if somebody is being stupid, don't feel as if somebody is going to attack you, and you'll be fine.

The center of the city is quite safe. You might get checked by police (like all foreigners) for visa registration, but when they see that everything is OK, they won't bother you.
