| well too...the OMON are not using deadly force...and going through situations like this...I'm sure the inmates also hamm it up too. Still sucks to be them. But hey...prison is not to be a joke like it is here in the USA |

Your prisons are no picnic. Once again, you see through rose coloured glasses. I've been there. It sure as hell cured me.

Well this sounds great for a person ny themselves but we are going with the family. Perhaps some of you could tell me if the is a hotel that looks at red square. Is there such ! We used to stay at Hotel Russia but it is gone. Is the anything else to see it from for some good photos or video...

As usual, new years on Red Square '08 was quite unpredicable.
For '07, I tried to come in through the Ohotniy Ryad entrance at 11pm, but police informed us they closed Red Square off at 10pm, entrance would only be with some sorts of tickets, though people who gave the police a little .. gift .. seemed to get through. There were many not-so-sober folks attempting to shove the police barricade.
In '08, afraid of being blocked off the square (and being in a pushing-shoving match with people from every ex-Soviet republic), I arrived to Ohotniy Ryad at about 9pm. There was a huge pushing/shoving match to get through the first metal detector, but it was a bit more organized at the second metal detector (to actually reach the square). On the square itself, the pushing/shoving was a bit too rough for me to try to make it closer to the stage, but from where I was I could hear American christmas music with Russian lyrics.
However, what was different this year was they seemed to be letting people in right up until Midnight (in waves of course) from Ohotniy Ryad. Other than pushing/shoving, and Putin's celebratory speech on the square (and an amazing fireworks display), there was nothing really special or exciting on Red Square.

If you knew anything about police work in the US, you would know that is a bunch of crap. SWAT teams (and that term varies from place to place. In NYC, it is known as ESU-Emergency Services Unit) are there primarily for specialized entry , hostage negotiation, and not, not anything goes.....SWAT are not a bunch of thugs, as this Russian unit appears to be.
I was a NYC paramedic for 22 years, I worked closely at times with ESU. Good bunch of cops. |

Swat means business, but they don't plow down innocent people while they are doing it either.
I think those correctional officers in the prisons here go through the same type of training as the swat groups...they call them PTF...Prison Tactical Force....they go through the worse type of training...I don't see how they take the chemical training....they say you feel like your insides are going to fall out of your eyes and mouth....vomiting, slobbering ect......  |

Like usual BC is full of crap...SWAT are not a bunch of thugs...and adhere to rules just like the other of our Police forces, Military Units, and any other civil service organizations. And yes there maybe a few bad apples from time to time but usually they are found out and prosecuted.
Yes it was Expat who posted on Red Square New Years. Ok from what I saw on the news...it looked very boring and regulated. Here in Odeca it was fire works all night long...pretty cool! I didn't go down town though...as my apartment is about a 10 minute drive to there. And I hadn't figured out the buses yet.
Ok to answer your question Kras....Odeca is very very nice...Down town has really good architecture and all the expensive shops. The Opera house is amazing. I like how things are pretty central...easy to walk to. I find the people really friendly...but very tall. I'm still learning the logists of getting around and my russian is so bad...it's a struggle to some degree. But yes definitely very nice here. We got some snow today but not much. I plan to go up to Kiev here next week. |

Well I have gone through a lot of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons training and I can say this...it's no fun and pretty scary really! If it comes to the reality of being subjected to any of it in real life situation...training or no training...kiss your a$% good bye! It's not like we carry the proper PPE with us at all times. And when we are subjected to these weapons undetectedly...ha it's too late. Most training involves initially a high dose of CS gas...which won't kill you but will definitely put you in a world of hurt. Yes all your snot and mucus will come out uncontrollably and it is an irritant. Makes your eyes water and shut. I've rubbed it in my eyes by mistake and that put me on my ass. But I will say this the blood and nerve agents are the killers. Saddaam gassed our troops with Sarin gas durring GW1 where the mine fields were laced with it. also we found lots of war heads with it in GW2. It's scary business and one can only imagine a place like New york city getting hit and with such tall buildings and poor air circulation on a muggy summer day...it won't be good for the home team. |

In your dreams they aren't. I've seen video of innocent bystanders getting beaten. I've seen a 73 year old man with parkinsons hog tied on the ground. What a surprise though, one uniform defending another. I bet I could get a million hits by searching for police abuse. Police in general are a bunch of thugs, except, of course in your land of perpetual sunshine.
