Hi. i have a question to anyone who has already traveled on trans-mongolian train. How does the border crossing go? First you cross border to exit russia, do you get both - russian and mongolian border officials on the train at the same time? or is it russians first and then after them - mongolians when you enter mongolia? What do they check - passports? what about tickets and stuff? The reason why i'm asking is i have 2 passports (also complicated by 2 different names in both passports) and want to exit russia on one but enter Mongolia on another, i emailed mongolian embassy but they never reply...
Did anyone has an experience in similar situation? or remember how does the border crossing go?

do not worry! 1st u cross russian border & show passport with russian visa. then in few hours u cross mongolian border & show another passport with mongolian visa. normally they do not check luggage so also do not worry if mongolians bring their stuff in ur compartment  buy tickets with passport with russian visa |

So russians will not ask where is my mongolian visa and won't ask me to show a different passport?
