I've read some of the threads here but they all seem to be a few years out of date. What is the current situation on bringing a private car to Russia to cover a contract period of work of 2 years?
I've worked all over Eastern Europe and Ukraine and there I could drive my private UK registered car without paying any customs, etc, provided I took it out at the end of my time there and didnt want to register the car there. Is Russia the same?
I'm currently in Libya and fancy driving my 10 year old Range Rover with all our family and 'kit' to Moscow, overland through Tunisia and then ferry to Italy and then across Europe. I don't want to register the car in Russia and do not want to sell it there.
Any current info greatly appreciated as will be leaving here in 6 weeks! |

Taking a car into Russia is quite easy and so is extending the temporary import certificate. All the requirements are detailed on the website and have been discussed many times on the forum.
You will probably all need visas? Which country passport? and you will need to register at an address in order to be able to extend the temporary import certificate for the car. You need to look at the visa and registration regulations on the website. You may need to prolong the temorary import certificate more than once during the 2 year period of your contract. Do you speak russian?
Do some research and come back with some specific questions.
I took a car in last summer and extended it - that's not 2 years - not searching hard enough!

Dear Mr Wayne,
Via finland at either border crossing is okay. There are some euro costs and some rouble costs at the border. On the Finland side, you need car insurance for Russia. Buy 30 days and renew later in russia. Maybe EUR50. Then in order to get the customs t.i.cert there's some rouble expenses which are fairly low. Buy around £200 of roubles in finland and you'll have enough tio fuel, food and anything at the border. The customs charges are really documentation charges and only a few £ from memory. Certainly no more than £25 if I remember correctly. To extend your t.i.c (10 working days issued at border) you need to visit km26 warshawski schosse outside of the MKAD (their M25). Details on website. This process will cost not more than around £25 in roubles from memory. BUT you have to "register" your visa first and the t.i.cert will only be extended for the duration of your registration or visa whichever is the shorter. Take a russian speaker with you. Above all read my posts on this subject and the transport section of the website and you should be okay. I was.
