Sorry for the late answer. I didn't notice this question.

What's the cost of living in a place like Zlatoust, compared to Moscow or St Petersburg?

Well. Zlatoust is quite standard provincial city. Food and domestic goods usually costs roughly equally in the provincial cities and the big ones such as St Petersburgh, Moscow, Ekaterinburgh etc. The main difference is that big cities offer wide range of goods from very cheap to very expensive. Public utilities have same kind of difference. Services are usually cheaper in the provincial cities and more expensive in the big ones. Bribes too. There could be very big difference. Apartments and renting. The bigger city is, the more expensive apartments and renting are.

In a city where I currently live (1 million of people) it is required about 20000 roubles a month to live for a family of two people:
1. Public utilites - water, electricity, house maintenance, etc (3 rooms flat): 2000 (summer)..3000 (winter) roubles
2. Phone line: ~ 200..400 roubles and/or two cell phones 400..1000 roubles (it depends on how much you talk).
3. Internet. ~200..1000 roubles (greatly depends on a contract with an ISP).
4. Gas for a car: ~ 2000 roubles without long distance rides
5. Parking: ~1500..1800 roubles
6. Food: ~ 2000..8000 roubles (it highly varies and depends on what you eat). 2000 means cheap food made of harbohydrates, no or little meat, fish and fresh vegetables. 8000 - healthy food.

If you are in a capital you can expect 1, 4, 5 grow; 2, 3 shrink; 6 roughly same and if you don't have your own flat you can expect a huge rent price roughly equal to all above.

A funny situation: I was in a business trip to Moscow. I lived in a corporate flat which was bought specially for such trips. Once in the morning a doorbell rang. Two men in uniforms.
- We are from an electrical company. We are going to cut your electricity off.
- Why?
- There is a big debt hangs on this flat. It was sold with that debt and the debt is still not paid. The debt is more than 10000 roubles.

They show papers to me. Everything seems ok.

- Obviously there is some error or a special man who maintain this flat simply forgot to pay. He'll do it immediately.

I call to the man, but his phone is out of reach.

- Well, guys. I can't reach him right now. He is going to appear within an hour or two. What about agreement? I give you some "present" and you'll forget about this flat until tomorrow. Anyway he'll pay today.
- Ok. How much?
- I don't know. 100 roubles, 200 perhaps.
Laugh
- 1000! It is a minimum.
- What! You want 1000 roubles for doing nothing, don't you! If you cut electicity right now you'll return in an hour and connect it back. I offer you... well 400 roubles for doing nothing.
- No way. 1000. Usually we get 1000 for each of us, but we see you are from the province so we'll give you a discount.
- Idiots. Then you will work twice and get nothing. Disconnect it!
- As you wish.

They disconnect electicity.

- Bye.
- Bye.

An hour later the special man arrived.

- They disconnected electricity because you didn't pay debt. You need to do it right now.
- Oh sh*t! I simply forgot. I'll do it right now. But why didn't you give a bribe to them?
- I tried but they wanted too much.
- How much?
- 1000.
- Holy shit, it was cheap... I'd gave them that thousand without questions.

He departed to pay. An hour later same men in the uniform returned and connected electricity back. Silently.

This tale reflects a mental profile and a difference in a price structure between Moscow and provincial cities.

I really don't understand the whole carbohydrate thing, I'm no dietetician. It's easier to just eat no junk food (potatoes is the cheapest, do you count it as unhealthy ?)... and in Russia even easier since there is usually little junk food. Or am I junk food blind when I go shopping... there are a few rows I skip when I'm in the supermarket, but I think it's mostly dog food.

About the electricity guys : Well done !
That's the way to do it, don't give anything ! On one of my first trips, a policeman stopped me and, noting I didn't have registration (was my 2nd or third day), told me he was going to arrest me (I was supposed to be scared). After 20 minutes of him waiting for some cash, I asked when we'll go to the police station, and seeing I wasn't going to give anything he gave me my passport back, telling me to f*ck off.

I'll only be happy when Putin & co. stop talking about corruption and do something about it though. They could get dozens of people fired from different positions every day. After a few months, and just a few thousand people fired (and the word CORRUPT in red in their work book) no doubt that policemen would simply ask for the payment of the official fine, that provodniki would travel alone in their compartments, that official documents requiring 5 days wouldn't be obtained in 5 minutes (although they'll have to rethink the procedure in most cases), that custom inspectors paid 20000 per months wouldn't buy huge apartments (then they can raise their salary). Who knows what such a change could lead to ? Taxis with taximeters ??? The abandon of the shitty registration system ???

Cheap food is usually contain too much carbohydrates - bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, noodles (especially chinese with chemicals), sugar and all kinds of sweets. I can't say that carbohydrate based food is a junk food. It is simply much of energy for relatively small amount of money. It's all about income. People with low income usually eat more pasta and potatoes and less meat, vegetables (I'm aware that potatoes are related to vegetables Smile ) and fruits.

I'm fully agreed. Bureaucrates and corrupt officials must die and registration system is shit.

Another very informative and very interesting reply, Ender. Especially about bribes! Thank you very much for sharing with us again. Smile

Please people, before you begin sainting Ender, take some time to read some of his older posts where he clearly shows how much of a racist he is.

Sure, he may have mellowed out now that he has got his kicks out of his racist rants about Georgians, Chechens and other ethnic minorities, but make no mistake about it:

Ender is a man that you wouldn't want to consider a friend. On the contrary, he has the ability to be one of the worst racists you have ever come across and brings shame to Russia because of his white-supremacist views.

ps. Before you start spouting your diverse ethnic background, Ender, why don't you tell everybody about some of the older posts you have written? Better still, I'll provide a set of links on here so that people can directly see for themselves how much of a racist you really are.

Here's my personal favourite, where Ender can be clearly seen defending Slobodan Milosevic, amongst other ethnic minority murderers:

I particularly like the way that Xela owns Ender in this conversation. Ender gets more and more angry, and starts using false history and facts (including not knowing that England is a part of Great Britain!), only for Xela and other posters to beat him down time and again.

Ender wrote (in Georgia thread):

Quote:

Everyone here is aware of my opinion about the 08.08.08 events. And I don't give a f*k how to properly call these islands (which government has the clearly anti-Russian politic) - England, United Kingdom, Great Britain when I have an argument with the types like Xela and you. You wrote your location is Moscow. You should know that Russians use the word "Англия" to denote the whole Great Britain, and "Англия" literally translates to England. If you don't know it simply demonstrates the lack of your knowledge.

I'd like to read something interesting from you, but unfortunately you are spitting your usual poison. Don't poison yourself.

Everyone here is aware of the fact that you're a racist, Ender, your opinion on the 08.08.08 events clearly only exposed you for everyone to see.

Of course, being you, you'll think your attitude is normal, and ironically that's where you differ from any normal person. You mention the use of Англия, on the contrary, most people you speak to in Moscow are well aware of the concept of England, Scotland and Ireland being different countries, unless they're like you, in which case they're probably not well aware of anything other than what state television tells them. Still, for a man who openly had no issues with the murder of Alexander Litvenenko, Ender, I don't think that ultimately the opinion of an easily-baited idiot like you matters that much in the end.

Ah-h-h-h-h... now I understand. I didn't notice it in your previous posts. It looks like I stepped into a liberast. I don't argue with liberasts. Bye.

Not in the slightest, darth vader; I was simply disappointed this thread wasn't entitled Interview of "Ender", a Russian racist, that's all.

It's not an argument, Ender, just a wake-up call to let others know what kind of racist they are dealing with.
