The easiest way to rent an apartment (even for 1 night) is through AirBnB: most of the options are centrally located and cost about €50 per night, which is an OK price.

Most of the apartments look like they have been renovated in the 90s, like full of carpets and heavy Soviet furniture ñ so that adds up to their authenticity but may put some of the more sensitive people off.
 
Look for the locations closer to the Kremlin as you will be sure to be in a nicer neighborhood this way.
