If travelling overnight by train from Moscow to St P, will we need/ how can we get a tourist voucher?

Spending 4 nights in Moscow, train to St P, 10 day cruise, 4 more nights in St P after the cruise. One additional night before the cruise, either overnight train or hotel in St P, tbd. Would the unconfirmed night be a problem for obtaining a tourist visa? Can tourists take overnight train; have read tourists must stay in hotels but believe this means they can not stay in private homes on a tourist visa.

No problem for the visa and yes you can take an overnight train. You can stay in a private home on a tourist visa it's just that to get the visa you need to specify you're staying in some paid accommodation, but then nothing prevents you from changing your mind afterwards (it's not illegal).
