Why do so many historical buildings remain in Saint Petersburg after all the WWII bombings?

I visited Saint Petersburg last July and was overwhelmed by its beauty, history and cultural relevance. But there's one question I forgot to ask: How come are there still so many 18th and 19th century buildings after the 900-day nazi blockade and bombings? For example, all the Neva frontline palaces are intact, and It's not that they are small buildings either... How did they manage to save them?

I am native Russian speaker living in Saint-Petersburg, the second lardge city (after Moscow) of Russia. My offer is for foreign tourists who wants to visit our country and our beautiful city. I am not professional manager of tourism, I am just simple citizen of Russia and resident of Saint-Petersburg. My level of English is intermediate and I don’t speak perfectly in English. I don’t offer official excursions on customary roots, but I can show to you unknown for usual tourists places of Saint-Petersburg. You can inquire what is interesting for you and I will try to satisfy your wish. We can make your individual program together. Staying in a dormitory without being a student

Hello!

I am going to Russia (Saint-Petersburg or Moscow) this summer for an internship (on a student visa). Since I am on a tight budget and want to meet new people, I'd like to stay in a student dormitory (obshezhitie). But is this possible without being a student of SPBGU or MGU? Perhaps there are many free rooms since it is summer time?

If this is not possible, does anyone has any tips for finding a (cheap) place to stay?

Hi, I am a Russian-American who have recently graduated from a college in USA and I am planning on continuing my education in Europe. I was thinking and decided that while I wait for schools' decisions on my applications, I can work as a private tour guide in Saint-Petersburg. This is the city where I was born and raised, and I love it very much and I know it very well!!! I am in Saint-Petersburg right now and I will be here for a while, so if anyone is planning on visiting Saint-Petersburg and needs help getting around, finding hotel, being picked up from an airport or anything else, I will be glad to assist you.
