Russian Visa Registration Service Question

+1 vote
What exactly is this registration for? I don't understand it. Why is it worth paying for this service exactly? I want to know what it is. If say I don't get it do I have to register elsewhere?

You are obliged by the law to register your Russian visa when you arrive to Russia, if you're staying longer than 7 days. You should also register in each new city you travel to if you stay there longer than 7 days. If you don't register you might get fined by the cops if they decide to check your documents and also – not be allowed to come back to Russia when you leave the country (although that is extremely rare). So it's very much recommended to do the registration to avoid any complications.

The registration is normally done by a hotel where you're staying or by your landlord if you're staying at their apartment. It's simple and easy to do and costs about $5 to the host. Alternatively, you can do it through the company which issued your visa support - they charge a bit more for that, but their registration is valid for the whole duration of the visa, not only the period you're staying at one hotel, so it might be a good option to look into.
