If you want to apply for a Russian visa in Australia the best way to do that is through the new Russian visa center in Canberra.
 
This visa center is officially approved by the Russian consulate and you can apply in person or by post, which is very convenient if you don't want to travel to Canberra yourself. 
 
The procedure is the same as always. First, you need to get a Russian visa invitation document and travel insurance. Then you can fill out and print out the online application form on the Russian ministry of foreign affairs website — visa.kdmid.ru.
 
After you've done that, go to the website of the Russian visa center in Australia and book an appointment (you can choose Canberra or Sydney center there). If you don't want to go to the visa center personally, you can also apply by mail — the instructions are available on the visa center's website and they are pretty straight-forward. This will cost you extra $85 AUD, but the advantage is that you don't have to be there, which can be quite handy if you are busy or traveling in Asia.

The Processing Times and Prices

The processing time is 10-12 days for the standard service and 4-6 days for the express service. 
 
The prices are quite steep: $120 (plus $43 fee you cannot avoid) for the standard service and $240 (plus $43) for the express service. If you need a double-entry or multiple-entry visa the price is $192 and $360 accordingly (plus the standard $43 processing fee).
